Why a retired welder signed up to be a mentor

Walter spent 40 years on a shop floor. Now he spends Thursday evenings helping a young adult plan her first job application.

An hour that changed his week

Walter thought mentoring was for people with degrees and titles. A friend at the pantry told him it was mostly about listening, and that he was good at that.

After the orientation he was matched with a young woman applying for apprenticeships. They meet weekly, practise interview answers and talk about how to ask for a raise.

He says the best part is the first five minutes, when they catch up on each other’s week.

Could you do it?

If you can give one hour a week for a year, we will teach you the rest. Applications are open on the Get involved page.
